Trump optimistic talks with Iran will be successful

More than three weeks after U.S. strikes on Iran began, President Donald Trump is optimistic a deal will be made with the Islamic Republic.

Trump told reporters that talks with Iran have been underway, describing them as “very strong talks.” The president added that there have been “major points of agreement…almost all points of agreement.”

Despite Trump’s optimism, Iranian media claims the Iranian Foreign Ministry denies the talks. The president was asked who he had been speaking with in Iran. He said he believes the U.S. is speaking with the “most respected” leader, but confirmed it is not the supreme leader. However, the president refused to name the leader.

The president says they have agreed on some major points, one of which is Iran’s nuclear capability, emphasizing that the Iranians want to make a deal.

Trump indicated in a Truth Social post that the talks have been ongoing for the past two days, adding that the talks are expected to continue “throughout the week.” Over the weekend, the president gave Iran a 48-hour deadline to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, or the U.S. would strike its power infrastructure.

In his post, the president backed down from the threats, saying he has “instructed the Department of War to postpone any and all military strikes against Iranian power plants and energy infrastructure for a five day period, subject to the success of the ongoing meetings and discussions.”

Despite the president saying the U.S. wouldn’t strike the power infrastructure, he didn’t indicate whether the U.S. would cease striking other targets inside Iran, including military sites.
