Election 2026: What is Louisiana’s Amendment 1?

(The Center Square) – Louisiana voters will decide Nov. 3 whether to allow surviving spouses of deceased veterans with service-connected disabilities to transfer an additional homestead property tax exemption when they move to a new residence.

The proposal, appearing as Amendment 1 on the statewide ballot, would allow qualifying surviving spouses to retain the tax benefit after relocating.

Under current law, eligible surviving spouses can retain the exemption on their existing home, but the benefit generally cannot follow them if they move.

The proposed amendment would allow a one-time transfer to another qualifying property, potentially reducing property taxes for surviving spouses who relocate.

A vote in favor would authorize the transfer, while a vote against would maintain the existing restrictions.

The proposal is one of several constitutional amendments Louisiana voters will consider in November. Each requires a simple majority of votes cast on the measure to become law.
