SHARE NOW

Early voting begins

Early voting for the Nov. 5 general election begins Thursday in most parts of the state. Cook County and the city of Chicago will have early voting beginning early next month.

Voters can vote in person at their local election authority’s office. In the weeks ahead, some election jurisdictions will have early voting sites set up with staff to field early voters.

Mail in ballots will also be available for voters to fill out and send in or deliver directly to election officials.

Libraries to receive literacy grants

The state of Illinois has awarded nearly $22 million in taxpayer funds to libraries across the state for various services and $6 million for specific literacy programs.

Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias, who is also the state librarian, said the grants will enhance online catalogs, support operations, expand interlibrary loan programs and equip vision-impaired individuals with narrations of newspaper content.

Rally planned over Chicago school closures

Parents of Chicago Public Schools students and community leaders plan to rally and demand more information about planned closures and mergers of 100 schools.

The group said the planned closures predominantly impact Black neighborhoods. They plan to hold a news conference outside Clemente Community Academy High School Thursday afternoon before a Chicago Board of Education meeting.
