Jury to begin deliberations in Madigan trial
Government attorneys have started their final rebuttal at the bribery, racketeering and official misconduct trial of former Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan. Assistant U.S. Attorney Amar Bhachu said the charges against Madigan are “based on matters of undeniable fact.” The veteran prosecutor reminded jurors that the former speaker’s allies were paid $1.3 million for doing little or no work. Jury deliberations are expected to begin today at the Dirksen U.S. Courthouse in Chicago.
Egg prices expected to continue climb
As bird flu cases surge, egg prices are skyrocketing in Illinois and around the country. Since December 2023, the average price for a dozen eggs nationwide has increased by 65% to more than $4 and are expected to continue to rise. A spokesperson with the Illinois Farm Bureau says short supplies because of avian influenza is leading to the higher prices.
Satellite dazzles while re-entering atmosphere over Illinois
A bright fireball put on a dazzling display Tuesday night across several Midwestern states, including Illinois. Just after 9 p.m., burning debris could be seen streaking eastward across the night sky and could be seen in northern Illinois. The American Meteor Society received more than 60 reports of a fireball sighting across the Midwest. The fireball was identified as a Starlink satellite re-entering the Earth’s atmosphere.
