Storms expected through Tuesday

Illinois could see an active weather pattern this week. Multiple rounds of storms are expected through Tuesday night.

Strong to severe storms will be possible by Monday afternoon and could persist through early evening. Damaging winds and heavy rain are the primary threats but isolated instances of large hail and tornadoes are possible. Another line of thunderstorms could impact Illinois Tuesday night.

Diocese reorganizing

In the wake of an announcement by the Joliet Catholic Diocese closing parishes, the Catholic Diocese of Peoria is reorganizing a number of parishes, citing fewer people, priests and resources.

Officials said they will consolidate its current 156 parishes into 75. They note that there are nearly 50% fewer people in the parishes over the last decade.

Capone’s gun sells at auction

The favorite sidearm of gangster Al Capone has been sold at auction. The Colt 1911, which he called “Sweetheart” because he said it saved his life on several occasions, sold for $885,000. It sold for far less than estimations, which the auction house predicted would be between $2 million and $3 million.

Capone’s granddaughters initially put the pistol up for auction in 2021, alongside about 200 of their grandfather’s personal belongings.
