(The Center Square) – The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development will break ground on Phase 2 of a new road project in Haughton.

The department said Tuesday it plans to reconstruct a section of LA 3227 near the intersection with LA 157 in Bossier Parish. It expects the project to facilitate economic development while improving the flow of traffic. Lane closures will begin June 2.

“With over 15,000 motorists utilizing LA 157 and more than 6,600 traveling LA 3227 on average each day, this restructuring of the intersection is an important proactive investment in the state’s transportation system,” said Public Information Officer Erin Buchanan for the Shreveport-Bossier District of the Transportation Department.

Residents and travelers can anticipate the $6.5 million project to be completed by early 2026.

Plans for the project include realigning LA 3227, moving the current traffic signal to a new LA 3227/LA 157 intersection, and making LA 3227 westbound to LA 157 a right-in, right-out only. Travelers looking to go south on LA 157 from LA 3227 will use the new intersection.

According to a release, Phase 1 of the project was completed in the summer of last year when LA 157 was widened from two lanes to five to prep for the newly announced construction in June.

The realignment project is one of 18 previously announced projects by the Transportation Department in March. The 18 projects across Louisiana are expected to cost $44.4 million.

Other updates include the one-year mark of the new Jimmie Davis Bridge project in Bossier and Caddo parishes. The project is estimated to cost $360 million and is one of the largest investments in Louisiana’s transportation system over the past few years. The project, once complete, will change how travelers cross the Red River in the south Shreveport-Bossier area.

The new bridge is expected to service over 30,000 travelers a day once completed in 2027.

This project is separate from the LA 3227 alignment project.
