(The Center Square) — Voters in the upcoming municipal elections in Caddo Parish will not only have constitutional amendments, but three school board tax renewals to decide.
The March 29 ballot will have three millage renewals for the Caddo Parish School District. Each proposition is for the continuation of current millages and does not have any new additions.
Proposition No. 1 details a salary millage renewal authorizing the school district to continue to collect a tax of 19.49 mills on all eligible property in the district that is subject to taxes. One year of the tax is estimated to bring in $41,322,000.
The renewal is for 10 years, starting in 2027 and ending in 2036. This tax pays salaries and benefits for teachers and employees of the Caddo Parish School Board.
Proposition No. 2 details a school improvement millage, which authorizes the school district to continue collecting a tax of 4.97 mills on all property eligible and taxed in the district. This specific millage is estimated to bring in $10,537,000 in one year.
Similiar to Proposition No. 1, the period for this tax renewal is 10 years beginning in 2027 and ending in 2036. The collections from this millage go towards renovating, repairing, and improving public school buildings within the district.
Proposition No. 3 looks to renew a technology millage, which gives the district permission to continue collecting a tax of 1.21 mills on all property subject to taxes in the district for 10 years starting in 2027 and ending in 2036. This tax is estimated to bring in around $2,565,000 in one year.
The collections from this tax will go to technology costs, including operating computers, software equipment, facilities and technology problems. This also includes construction, acquisition and renovation of any of these items in the public schools in Caddo.
According to a 2024 millage report from the Caddo Parish Assessor’s Office, the total millage from parish-wide schools is 72.59 mills. In comparison, the total mills collected from the parishes of Shreveport, Bossier and Vivian is 2.94. The juvenile court millage sits at 1.88 and the law enforcement district millage is 13.59 mills.
