Op-Ed: People Are Choosing Louisiana Again

SHARE NOW

For years, Louisiana became known for what it was losing. Families packed up for Texas, Florida, and Tennessee in search of better jobs, safer streets, and stronger schools. Too many accepted the painful idea that our best days were behind us. Outmigration became a fact of life, especially among our educated young people.

That narrative is changing.

Newly released data confirm Louisiana added residents for the second consecutive year in 2025, with young adults accounting for most of that growth. Even more encouraging, our state tied for the nation’s largest year-over-year increase in labor force participation as nearly 33,000 more Louisianians entered or reentered the workforce.

Population growth is one of the clearest measures of a state’s success. People vote with their feet. They move toward opportunity, safety, and a future worth building. Businesses follow. Workers stay. When young adults choose to build their future here instead of somewhere else, it signals something far more important than numbers on a chart; it signals confidence.

That is exactly what Louisiana, under the leadership of Governor Jeff Landry, is beginning to restore.

Success leaves clues, and Louisiana’s comeback did not happen by accident. It is the result of Governor Landry’s deliberate change in direction after years of decline. To appreciate how far we’ve come, we only have to remember where we were just a few years ago.

Don’t you recall when New Orleans was labeled America’s murder capital? Today, under Governor Landry’s law-and-order agenda, murders are down 55% from their 2022 peak. Carjackings have fallen 35%, armed robberies are down 28%, and the city recently recorded its lowest homicide count in nearly 50 years. Those aren’t just statistics. They’re safer neighborhoods, stronger communities, and lives protected.

Don’t you recall when Louisiana ranked near the bottom nationally in education? Today, under Governor Landry’s education reforms, our state has made the largest one-year improvement in its history on the Nation’s Report Card. Louisiana now ranks first in the nation in reading growth and second in math growth. Policies like “Let Teachers Teach” restored classroom discipline, reduced bureaucracy, and put academics back at the center of education.

Don’t you recall when Louisiana seemed stuck in economic stagnation? Today, thanks to Governor Landry’s aggressive economic development strategy, the state has secured more than $100 billion in announced private investment – an unprecedented level of economic development that is creating thousands of good-paying jobs across every region. Companies aren’t just investing in Louisiana’s resources; they’re investing in Louisiana’s future.

Working families are seeing tangible benefits from Governor Landry’s leadership: the largest state income tax cut in Louisiana history, insurance reforms that are beginning to lower rates, and workforce programs preparing our people for the high-paying careers these investments are generating.

Lower taxes. Safer streets. Better schools. More jobs. Government that delivers results.

These are not campaign slogans. They are the building blocks of a state where people want to live, work, raise families, and invest.

Perhaps most encouraging is the surge in labor force participation. More Louisianians believe in Louisiana again. They are choosing to work here, build careers here, and invest their futures here. That kind of confidence cannot be manufactured; it must be earned.

To be clear, our work is far from finished. Louisiana still faces real challenges. We must continue improving infrastructure, lowering insurance costs, and strengthening rural healthcare. But direction matters more than perfection.

For too long, success in Louisiana was measured by whether we were declining more slowly than the year before. Today, we measure success by genuine growth: more people choosing to stay, more workers participating, more investment flowing in, and more opportunity emerging.

The latest numbers tell a powerful story. For years, Louisiana was known for what it was losing. With Governor Landry at the helm, we are becoming known for what we are gaining: residents, jobs, investment, and renewed confidence.

The numbers don’t lie. People are choosing Louisiana again. If we continue supporting Governor Landry’s common-sense policies that reward work, encourage investment, strengthen families, and keep our communities safe, Louisiana’s comeback will not only continue; it will accelerate.

Louisiana’s best days are still ahead.
