Ambitious national movement aims to put a practical resilience resource into the hands of 1 million Canadians facing life-changing circumstances

EDMONTON, Alberta — August 17, 2026 — Bestselling author, international speaker and former physician Dr. Allen S. Lycka today announced the launch of the When Life Changes Everything™ National Resilience Initiative, an ambitious Canadian movement with one central mission:

Put a practical resilience resource into the hands of 1 million Canadians when life changes everything.

The initiative is built around When Life Changes Everything™, a practical resource designed for people confronting serious illness, disability, grief, caregiving, divorce, job loss, financial upheaval and other profound life disruptions.

Lycka is now recruiting National Founding Partners and Coalition Partners, with broad interest emerging across eight sectors: healthcare and cancer care; patient, disability and caregiver organizations; benefits, insurance and workplace wellness; major employers and corporations; foundations and community networks; faith-based organizations; hospitality and industry; and education and professional networks.

The initiative remains in its coalition-building stage, with discussions underway and formal partnerships still being developed.

When Life Changes Everything

The initiative grew from Lycka’s own life-changing experience.

“Years ago, I was told I had ALS and six months to live,” said Lycka. “In a matter of seconds, the future I thought I had disappeared. Ultimately, that diagnosis proved incorrect, but the experience changed my life forever.”

Lycka realized that millions of people eventually experience their own moment when life suddenly divides into before and after.

“For one person, it’s cancer. For another, it’s a stroke, disability or serious illness. Someone else loses the person they love, becomes a caregiver, loses a career or faces another crisis,” Lycka said.

“Eventually, the same question emerges:

‘My life has changed. What do I do now?’”

That question became the foundation for When Life Changes Everything™.

The resource is designed to help people move from:

DISRUPTION → RESILIENCE → HOPE → PURPOSE → POSSIBILITIES

It does not replace medical treatment, counseling, employee assistance programs or other professional services. It is designed to complement them—giving organizations something practical they can place into the hands of people navigating extraordinary change.

The Resource and the Movement

Lycka says creating the resource solves only half the challenge.

The second is getting it to people when they need it most.

The National Resilience Initiative is therefore building a cross-sector coalition of organizations that already touch Canadians during major life transitions—from hospitals and patient organizations to employers, insurers, caregiver groups, foundations, faith communities and educational institutions.

“The resource creates the impact. The coalition creates the scale.”

“No single organization can reach a million Canadians,” Lycka said. “One hospital can’t. One employer can’t. One insurer can’t. One charity can’t. But a coalition can.

One Million Is the Reach Goal. Impact Is the Real Goal.

Lycka says success will not simply be measured by the number of resources distributed.

One million is our reach goal. Impact is our real goal,” he said. “I don’t want us to someday celebrate because we distributed a million resources. I want us to demonstrate that we helped people.”

Early partners may help pilot, evaluate and improve the resource by examining whether it helps people strengthen resilience, restore hope, identify practical next steps, reconnect with purpose and see possibilities again.

“This isn’t about asking every organization to do the same thing,” Lycka said. “It’s about asking each organization:

‘Where can you make the greatest difference?’”

Maybe It Is a Little Crazy

Lycka acknowledges that reaching 1 million Canadians is an audacious objective.

As Apple’s iconic Think Different campaign declared:

“The people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world are the ones who do.”

“Perhaps reaching one million Canadians is a little crazy,” Lycka said. “But imagine what happens if we do.

“Imagine one million people going through one of the hardest periods of their lives receiving something that helps them realize:

‘My life has changed—but my life isn’t over.’

“That is the movement we’re building.”

National Partners Now Being Recruited

The When Life Changes Everything™ National Resilience Initiative is inviting organizations to explore participation as National Founding Partners, Coalition Partners, Pilot Partners, Distribution Partners, Evidence and Research Partners, and Community Partners.

Lycka is deliberately focusing on building substantive partnerships before undertaking a broad national media campaign.

“The goal isn’t to make noise about a movement. The goal is to build one.”
