From his start in Edmonton to becoming one of Canada’s most beloved sports broadcasters, Gene continues to make hockey coverage both insightful and fun.
Gene Principe is a Canadian sports broadcaster and the longtime host of Edmonton Oilers broadcasts on Sportsnet. Born in Edmonton to Italian immigrant parents, he began his career in 1987 after studying broadcasting at NAIT. Over the years, he worked in Kamloops, Grande Prairie, Lethbridge, Winnipeg, and Toronto before returning home in 1998 to cover the Oilers. Since joining Sportsnet in 2001, Gene has become a fan favorite, best known for his playful use of puns, props, and skits during pre-game segments bringing humor and heart to hockey coverage while celebrating his hometown team.
